BPL THREAT TO CB RADIO AND OTHER HF USERS

Introduction

A concerted effort is being made by those with a vested interest to establish Broadband powerline (BPL) systems. Data delivered would piggy-back on the existing overhead/underground power lines as well as the power lines within the home or office. Some of the uses for BPL would include computers, printers, telephones and other telecommunications equipment.

BPL over the standard power lines system causes severe interference within the 2 - 30 MHz range. Amateur radio, CB radio and other HF radio operators (VKS-737, Police, Radtel, RFDS, State Emergency Service, St John Ambulance etc.) currently enjoy interference protection legislation. The power industry wants this interference protection to be removed so as to further its own cause. BPL technology to be introduced will be to the detriment of HF users.

Discussions on internet newsgroups have raised the issue of a possible introduction of Packet Radio to the Citizens Band Radio Service. Although the Australian Communications Authority have no proposal to introduce such a system, it deserves worthy of consideration and debate as to whether or not the CB fraternity would hold interest in having Packet Radio implemented in the future.
