WHAT IS C.A.R.E.S.?
C.A.R.E.S. is the name of a group of dedicated volunteer's assisting your
community through the medium of two-way radio.
C.A.R.E.S. stands for Central Australia Radio Emergency Service and the
volunteer's monitor the government allocated emergency frequencies channel 5 UHF
and channel 9 HF on your Citizens Radio Bands.
Since its inception in June of 1996, the group has handled many calls from local
people and travellers in the out-back and assisted them with their many
problems. The group has the support of the Northern Territory (N.T.) Police and
the N.T. Emergency Service's. Simply put, the primary function of
C.A.R.E.S. is to supply that missing link, connecting the scene of the emergency
to the required service. This enables C.A.R.E.S. to aid the public through their
Citizen Band Radio's to summons help in cases of accidents, road hazards and
other emergencies that may cause suffering and distress in the community.
C.A.R.E.S. also monitors the Four Wheel Drive Channel 10 HF in the Citizen Band
and also the Royal Flying Doctor Service (R.F.D.S.) frequency of 5410 Khz only
after VJD Alice Springs has closed down for the night. C.A.R.E.S. will also
offer a weather and road alert reports on request. It is affiliated with
Australian National 4WD Radio Network and the Outback 4WD Club. C.A.R.E.S works
very closely with the mentioned organisations to form a well managed network of
communication facilities for the broader community.
In becoming a member of C.A.R.E.S., a Monitor's Pack is received which includes
the following information.

The callsign allocated to new members takes the form of being thus; C.A.E.M. 0#
(Central Australian Emergency Monitor, followed by a number.) This callsign is
only to be used on the emergency frequency's. Trainee monitors will have the
number "0" incorporated into their callsign at the end of the call
letters. Once a prospective passes their basic monitors exam, the" 0"
is dropped from the call sign.
Any other course notes that may be accumulated during training, ie the
advanced monitors handbook, first aid notes etc., will be placed within
the Monitor's Pack. When issued with certificates, they can be stored within the
Pack as well in the event of being asked for information or have a need to refer
to information.
Any prospective member requiring assistance with studying for the basic exam or
has any other problem are welcomed to call on any full member for that
assistance. There are no membership fees involved in joining C.A.R.E.S.
