MOUNTAIN RADIO CHALLENGE (MRC) GROUP
by Tony Lock VFT355 of the MRC Group.
In the late 1980's a group of CB enthusiasts got together, by
"spreading out." Camping on mountain tops across Victoria, our aim was to
maximize the distance of ground wave contacts to the other MRC stations and base stations that were interested in participating in the event. A question and answer was usually sent between the 2 most distant stations, hopefully with minimal changes along the way. A series of frequencies and times on 27MHz & UHF are
determined before the day which are given with location details of all stations to all
members along with allocated MRC station numbers.
The MRC lets us get away from the city, to a good location. Many have created their own antennas and this is the perfect opportunity to test and modify
these. Its amazing the distances you can get with 2 co-phased Station Masters. Depending on the time of year and conditions the most successful contacts are made at
night and day gives good opportunity to do some DX work. From previous events we have a fair idea of how far we can
get and also UHF repeater accessibility. Many rural UHF and 27MHz operators are interested in what we do, especially in contacting some of the distant stations.
We have also had DX stations able to hear all stations of an event, and they can often help with relaying of messages if we are missing a link in our chain.
