The introduction of the HF (27Mhz) band in 1977 to Australia was not without its problems. It was the intention of the Government of the day to phase out the HF band by 1982. In 1980 the popularity of the Citizens Band Radio service (CBRS) was so enormous that the threat of loosing the service had created intense lobbying by interested parties and individuals to the Government to retain it. During this campaign, ACBRO had been formed by concerned CBers and was established as an Association whose main objective was, and still is today, to be a voice to the Government and Regulatory authorities, on behalf of all CBers to maintain, improve and oversee the CBRS. Eventually, the fight to retain the service was won and ACBRO today continue to be a major force on the Australian CB Scene.
Dateline - November 1980: Following the rallies, a group in Adelaide calling themselves ACBRO (Australian Association of Citizens and Band Radio Operators) started sending around petitions for the retention of 27 Mhz CB and aligned themselves with the Labor Party. It was probably due to their effort that the Shadow Minister for P&T, Mr. T. Innes, decided that a CB policy would be in order. (CB ACTION Magazine.)
ACBRO is a non-profit orginization dedicated to the promotion of unity among citizens using Australia's airwaves. The Association's early history was colourful and interesting, involving some of Australia's politicians in an effort to impart a clearer picture as to legislation and operation of the CBRS. Since its incorporation on October 1st in 1980, ACBRO has sent detailed submissions on many matters related to radio communications, including the review of the CBRS, UHF Repeater proposals and the Radio-Communications Act.

ACBRO conducts frequent meetings of the Administration Committee to which members may attend and weekly radio broadcasts on UHF, Tuesday nights at 8pm in Adelaide, South Australia. The Association publishes a magazine, avaliable to members, with up-to-date CBRS news and other matters relating to communications in general. Members are entitled to discounts on certain items from ACBRO's long-standing sponsors.

Apart from individuals becoming members, clubs can affiliate with ACBRO and add their backing to the Association. Affiliated Clubs are also able to have a representative on the Committee to express their club's view and vote accordingly.
